2016/12/20 – Grounded Materials Video

A external pageshort film of the course Grounded Materials has just been released.  The film gives a teaser of some of the trans-disciplinary teaching the Td-Lab is involved in across the ETH. This course aims to develop sustainable building materials, combining different perspectives and knowledges by working in inter-disciplinary teams.

2016/10/21 – Community of Wislikofen visits USYS TdLab

The USYS TdLab is organizing since many years its winter school “science meets practice” in the small community of external pageWislikofen. In our winter school, PhD students learn and test tools for stakeholder and public engagement with the population of Wislikofen. In recognition of the community’s great contribution, the mayor Heiri Rohner initiated a visit of 20 people with official duties to the ETH. A great event for the USYS TdLab with engaging presentations by some former participants of the winter school and heartfelt encounters between Wislikofen and the ETH!

2016/09/6 – TdLab member at the International Sustainability Transitions Conference

Mert Duygan presented his on-going PhD research at the external page7th International Sustainability TransitionsConference (IST) at Wuppertal, Germany. The first presentation included the findings of discourse network analysis carried out on Swiss waste management policy debate. The second presentation featured a speed-talk about the upcoming research on social networks and power constellations in Swiss waste management.

2016/09/02 – TdLab Urban Researchers at the Royal Geographical Society

TdLab was present in London last week at the annual conference of the Royal Geographical Society. The chosen theme was “Nexus Thinking” and TdLab members Alice Hertzog and Timo von Wirth presented their urban research. Alice Hertzog speaking of migration and entrepreneurship in the Parisian neighbourhood of Belleville and Timo von Wirth presenting his research on urban quality of life in Switzerland  and on decentralized energy systems in Switzerland on neighborhood scale.

2016/06/09 – Successful project conclusion and new publication

Martin Hitziger successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Mayan phytotherapy in Guatemala: a transdisciplinary study for ethnographic documentation and local empowerment”. The project was jointly conducted with Councils of Mayan Elders, University del Valle, the National Cancer Institute and other Guatemalan partners. It documents the traditional phytomedicine of this countries indigenous population, initiated the first cooperation between traditional healers and local biomedical practitioners, and advanced intercultural transdisciplinary research methods that are novel in such north-south settings. A first research article is external pagepublished and more are in preparation. The project was funded by the external pageCOGITO foundation and ETH Zurich.

The CGIAR Research Program on Dryland Systems is seeking young Interns who are interested in a fun Geo-Informatics System (GIS) summer internships and a learning-by-doing experience with the CGIAR Research Program on Dryland Systems (CRP-DS) to contribute to the development of a web-based Geo-Informatics System platform on SLM technologies and practices, and help us document and synthesize global Sustainable Land Management (SLM) technologies and practices for sustainable development.

2016/04/06 – New Publication by TdLab Members Timo von Wirth and Michael Stauffacher

Together with colleagues from the ETH research group Planning of Urban and Landscape Systems (PLUS) and the Institute of Sustainable Development at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), Timo v. Wirth and Michael Stauffacher published the article "Exploring the influence of perceived urban change on residents' place attachment" in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. Place attachment is known to be associated with the individuals' perception and assessment of environmental change (e.g. the siting of energy infrastructures). For the first time, this research analyzed place attachment in relation to rapid urban growth. The transdisciplinary project was based upon a close collaboration with the Swiss city of Schlieren and was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (NRP65). external pagedoi: 10.1016/j.jenvp.2016.03.001

2016/02/04 – The Winter School "Science meets Practice" successfully concludes for 2016

Now in its 6th year, the CCES Winter School “Science meets Practice” took place between 11–14 January and 1–4 February 2016 at Propstei Wislikofen (AG).

2016/01/26 – New Publication by TdLab Member Evelina Trutnevyte

Evelina Trutnevyte with colleagues from CIRED in France, RAND Santa Monica in United States, and University College London in United Kingdom published a perspective on external page"Reinvigorating the scenario technique to expand uncertainty consideration". The paper summarises the outcomes of the IQ SCENE workshop “Innovative techniques for Quantitative SCenarios in ENergy and Environmental research" that took place on 26–27 March 2014 at University College London. The workshop brought together over 30 researchers and practitioners from 9 countries worldwide in reviewing the state-of-the-art methods and future research directions for energy and environmental scenarios.

2016/01/21 – Publication of Td Case Study 2015 brochure

The brochure "Tiefen Geothermie: Das Projekt St. Gallen" with the results of the Transdisciplinary Case Study 2015 has just been published. Transdisciplinary Case Study is a course at ETH MSc Environmental Science and in 2015 it was organised in collaboration with the CCES/CCEM project Geotherm-2, Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research-Supply of Electricity (SCCER-SoE), and NFP70 project “Risk Governance”. The study asked what can be learnt from the geothermal project in St.Gallen for future projects in Switzerland and primarily focused on non-technical aspects.
